A RESTAURANT, selling authentic Malaysian food, will be opened in Qatar next month under the auspices of the Malaysian government, an official of the Malaysian embassy told Gulf Times yesterday.
First secretary at the Malaysian embassy Zahairi Baharim said the proposed restaurant is part of Malaysian government’s initiative aimed at boosting the country’s tourism and culture all over the world.
“The initiative is called the Malaysian Kitchen Programme (MKP), which was launched early this year and is aimed at establishing about 8,000 Malaysian restaurants across the globe,” he said.
He said QR2mn had been earmarked to finance the initiative, adding that the funds are made available as grants to operate the restaurant business.
“The initiative includes the supply of ingredients, training of chefs and other logistic support needed to run the restaurants,” Baharim said.
The MKP has already started restaurants in the UK, India, China and Japan,” he said.
The owner of the proposed restaurant in Qatar, Sunyta Ali said the outlet will be opened in October after Eid. The restaurant, called Seri Kebaya, will be located at Souq Wakif in downtown Doha.
Asked whether she would be adding Arab dishes to the menu, she said it might be added later. “Right now I am concentrating on Malaysian food because there is no place where it is served in Doha presently.
“The servings will be simple but with a Malaysian ambience,” she said.
Speaking about coping with the non-availability of Malaysian ingredients in Qatar, she said: “Because Malaysian cuisine has a mixture of Indian, Chinese and Malaysian spices and with a lot of Indian influence in the GCC as well, we can get all the essential ingredients here,” she said.
Asked about the prices, she said the rates will be “medium”. “I am not looking for five star dining at this moment. Basically, the restaurant is for everybody and considering the cost of living in Doha right now, it is not going to be very expensive,” she added.
